Telluride is at the end of a box canyon in the San Juans, and every way in is a mountain drive. That is exactly the kind of job we take. All-wheel-drive Mercedes Sprinters and luxury SUVs, drivers who have run these roads in weather, and a flight tracked before you land.
Montrose (MTJ) → Telluride: about 1 hour 20 minutes, roughly 65 miles. The practical arrival for most travellers.
Telluride Regional (TEX) → town: about 15 minutes. Closest by far — and the most weather-sensitive airport in Colorado.
Grand Junction (GJT) → Telluride: about 2 hours 30 minutes.
Denver (DEN) → Telluride: about 6 hours 30 minutes, roughly 330 miles.
Montrose is usually the right answer. It has real winter service, it sits at a sane elevation, and the drive in over Dallas Divide through Ridgway is beautiful and reliable. TEX is spectacular when it works — it is the highest commercial airport in the United States, on a mesa at 9,070 feet — but it closes for weather often enough that we would not build a tight itinerary around it.
Denver to Telluride is a long day. It is a legitimate booking and we run it, but if you have any flexibility on flights, MTJ will save you five hours.
We are based in Aspen, and the run between the two is one we know well: roughly four hours, down the Roaring Fork Valley and southwest through Montrose and Ridgway. In late summer and early autumn, when the high passes are open, it is one of the best drives in the state.
Groups splitting a trip between the two mountains — a few days in Aspen, a few in Telluride — are a natural fit for one operator and one vehicle rather than a second rental car and another set of logistics.
The San Juans get more snow than the northern mountains and the roads have less traffic keeping them clear. Dallas Divide can hold ice when the valley below is dry.
Every vehicle is all-wheel drive on winter tires. We watch conditions on the actual route rather than a regional forecast, and we build the buffer into your pickup time before we quote it. If a road genuinely is not safe, we will say so early and reschedule rather than gamble with you in the vehicle. That is the standard on every job we run.
