Diversions, and what we actually do about them

This is the part that matters at ASE. The approach is steep, the terrain is unforgiving, and the airport’s weather minimums are strict for good reason. When ceilings drop, aircraft divert — most often to Eagle County (EGE), Grand Junction (GJT), or Denver (DEN). It usually happens while you are already in the air, and you find out on landing.

We watch the inbound. If you are diverted, we do not wait for a phone call from an unfamiliar airport — we reposition a vehicle and tell you where to find it.

ASE, EGE or DEN: where you should actually fly

Most people booking Aspen airport transportation have already chosen their airport. It is worth knowing the tradeoff, because the cheapest flight is often not the cheapest trip.

Aspen/Pitkin County (ASE) is four miles from downtown and the ground leg is about ten minutes. It is also one of the most weather-sensitive commercial airports in the United States. The approach is demanding, the runway is short, and when the ceiling drops flights divert or cancel outright.

Eagle County (EGE) is about 70 miles out, roughly 90 minutes of driving. Larger aircraft, far fewer cancellations, and a drive that holds up in almost any weather. For a February trip where the schedule actually matters, EGE plus a ground transfer is frequently the more reliable plan than ASE.

Denver International (DEN) is 160 miles and about four hours door to door. More driving, but the most flight options and the fewest surprises. For two or more people it often beats connecting to the regional flight once you count the fare, the bag charges and the ground transport you still need at this end.

Meeting a commercial arrival at ASE

ASE is small in a way that works in your favour. One terminal, one baggage claim, and a curb you can see from inside. There is no hunting through a garage and no train between concourses.

Your driver tracks the tail number rather than the published schedule, so an early arrival is met early and a two-hour tarmac hold costs you nothing extra. We meet inside at baggage claim or at the curb, whichever you prefer, and we handle skis, boards and golf clubs as a matter of course rather than as a surcharge.

When ASE gets busy

Four windows tighten up every year and they are worth booking around: Christmas through New Year, the X Games week in January, Presidents Day weekend, and the summer run of Food & Wine and the Ideas Festival. In those windows both the flights and the ground transport book out weeks ahead.

Off-peak a few days notice is usually enough, and we take same-day calls when we have a vehicle free. But if you are landing at ASE on December 27th, book the car when you book the flight.

Departing from ASE

For a commercial departure out of ASE we aim to have you at the terminal 90 minutes before wheels-up in the quiet season and two hours during the holiday weeks, when the single security line backs up out the door.

The part people do not plan for is the cancellation. If your ASE departure is scrubbed for weather, the airline may not have another seat for a day, and your realistic option is four hours of ground to Denver. We hold capacity for that during winter on corporate and repeat accounts, because the call always comes in at the same moment for everybody in the valley. If you are on a flight you cannot miss, tell us in advance and we will plan the fallback rather than improvise it.
