Telluride is at the end of a box canyon in the San Juans, and every way in is a mountain drive. That is exactly the kind of job we take. All-wheel-drive Mercedes Sprinters and luxury SUVs, drivers who have run these roads in weather, and a flight tracked before you land.
Montrose (MTJ) → Telluride: about 1 hour 20 minutes, roughly 65 miles. The practical arrival for most travellers.
Telluride Regional (TEX) → town: about 15 minutes. Closest by far — and the most weather-sensitive airport in Colorado.
Grand Junction (GJT) → Telluride: about 2 hours 30 minutes.
Denver (DEN) → Telluride: about 6 hours 30 minutes, roughly 330 miles.
Montrose is usually the right answer. It has real winter service, it sits at a sane elevation, and the drive in over Dallas Divide through Ridgway is beautiful and reliable. TEX is spectacular when it works — it is the highest commercial airport in the United States, on a mesa at 9,070 feet — but it closes for weather often enough that we would not build a tight itinerary around it.
Denver to Telluride is a long day. It is a legitimate booking and we run it, but if you have any flexibility on flights, MTJ will save you five hours.
We are based in Aspen, and the run between the two is one we know well: roughly four hours, down the Roaring Fork Valley and southwest through Montrose and Ridgway. In late summer and early autumn, when the high passes are open, it is one of the best drives in the state.
Groups splitting a trip between the two mountains — a few days in Aspen, a few in Telluride — are a natural fit for one operator and one vehicle rather than a second rental car and another set of logistics.
The San Juans get more snow than the northern mountains and the roads have less traffic keeping them clear. Dallas Divide can hold ice when the valley below is dry.
Every vehicle is all-wheel drive on winter tires. We watch conditions on the actual route rather than a regional forecast, and we build the buffer into your pickup time before we quote it. If a road genuinely is not safe, we will say so early and reschedule rather than gamble with you in the vehicle. That is the standard on every job we run.
Telluride has two airports serving it and the choice shapes the trip.
Telluride Regional (TEX) is the highest commercial airport in the United States at 9,070 feet, perched on a mesa about six miles from town. When it is open, the transfer is fifteen minutes and there is nothing better. It is also fogged in, snowed out or closed for wind more than most pilots would like, and commercial service there is limited.
Montrose Regional (MTJ) is 65 miles away, about an hour and forty-five minutes of driving, and it is where most Telluride visitors actually land. Bigger runway, real airline service in ski season, and a far lower cancellation rate. A Telluride airport transfer from Montrose is the workhorse trip and the one we run most.
Grand Junction (GJT) is about 125 miles and two and a half hours, and it is worth knowing about because it often has seats and a fare when Montrose does not.
From Montrose you run south on US-550 to Ridgway, then turn west on Highway 62 over Dallas Divide at 8,970 feet, down to Placerville, and finally up Highway 145 along the San Miguel River into the box canyon where Telluride sits.
Dallas Divide is the part to respect. It is not long and it is not technical, but it is exposed, it drifts in wind, and it gets snowpacked well before the highways either side of it. Every vehicle we run is all-wheel drive and set up for winter before the season starts, and our drivers work this road in weather routinely.
Colorado enforces a Traction Law on these highways during storms — snow tires, all-wheel drive or chains. If you are considering a rental at Montrose in February, check what it is shod with before you commit to the drive.
Telluride is two places and they are not the same address.
The town of Telluride sits at the end of the box canyon at 8,750 feet — the historic grid, Colorado Avenue, the restaurants, and the streets that get narrow and snowbanked in winter.
Mountain Village is 1,000 feet higher on the other side of the ski area, reached by road around the mountain or by the free gondola over it. Most of the newer lodging and many of the private homes are up there. The road up is a real climb with switchbacks, and it is where all-wheel drive earns its money.
The gondola is free and it is excellent, but it does not run at 5am for a departure and it does not carry your luggage from a rental house. Tell us the street address and the gate code when you book.
People assume these two are close because they are both Colorado ski towns. They are about 200 road miles apart and the drive is four and a half to five hours, because the San Juans are between them and there is no direct route through.
We do run it, and it is a beautiful day out through Glenwood, Grand Junction and Montrose. But if you are planning to see both on one trip, build a full travel day around it rather than treating it as a transfer, or fly the leg and let us handle both ends.
Telluride books out around its festivals, and the ground transport goes before the lodging does. The Bluegrass Festival in June, the Film Festival over Labor Day weekend, the Blues and Brews in September, and the Christmas through New Year window are all worth booking weeks ahead.
A Mercedes Sprinter seats up to 14 with room for skis and boards, which for a festival group or a wedding party is cheaper per person than two SUVs and far less trouble than three rental cars trying to find parking in a box canyon. Car seats are no problem if you tell us ages when you book.
For a departure out of Montrose we leave Telluride three hours before wheels-up in winter and two and a half in summer. Dallas Divide is the reason for the margin. For a TEX departure, plan for the real possibility that the flight does not go and you need ground to Montrose instead — tell us in advance if you are on a flight you cannot miss and we will hold for it.
Call or text (720) 967-9956 with your flight number, the street address in town or Mountain Village, and how many people and bags, and we will come back with a flat quoted price.
Montrose (MTJ) for reliability — about 1 hour 20 minutes out. Telluride Regional (TEX) is 15 minutes away but frequently closed for weather.
About six and a half hours in good conditions. We run it, but flying into Montrose saves most of a day.
Yes, regularly. About four hours. It is one of our most requested long transfers.
Yes, and book as far ahead as you can. Bluegrass and Film Festival weekends sell out ground transportation well before they sell out lodging.
Always. Your vehicle, your schedule, your stops.
Send us the flight, the address and the passenger and gear count, and we will come back with a quote and a pickup time.
