Breckenridge to Denver International is 104 miles, and in clear conditions it takes just under two hours.

On a Sunday afternoon in March it can take four. That gap is the entire reason this page exists.

The route

I-70 east from Highway 9, up over Vail Pass, through the Eisenhower Tunnel at 11,000 feet, then down Floyd Hill and into Denver. From there it is another 25 miles across the city to DIA, which sits on the far eastern side.

There is no alternative worth taking. Loveland Pass is the old road over the divide, and it closes in weather — which is exactly when you would want it.

The Sunday problem

This is the most predictable traffic jam in Colorado, and visitors plan around it least.

Every skier in Summit County drives toward Denver on Sunday afternoon. The backup starts before the Eisenhower Tunnel and can stretch for miles. Westbound Friday is the mirror image.

If you are flying out on a Sunday evening, every mapping app will quote you two hours, and every one of them will be wrong. Leave two hours earlier than it tells you, or plan to be out of Breckenridge before 11am.

We watch the eastbound corridor on the morning of every departure we run, and we will move your pickup earlier if it looks like it is going to stack up. That call is worth more than the vehicle.

What time should I leave Breckenridge for a DIA flight?

Your flight departs DIA Leave Breckenridge (clear) Leave (winter or Sunday)
6:00 AM 1:30 AM 12:30 AM
9:00 AM 4:30 AM 3:30 AM
12:00 PM 7:30 AM 6:30 AM
3:00 PM 10:30 AM 9:00 AM

Two hours driving, two hours at the airport, plus a winter and Sunday margin. For a Sunday evening flight, look again at that last row — it is not a typo.

Winter on this road

Colorado’s traction law applies on I-70 between September 1 and May 31. Under Code 15 every vehicle needs adequate tread and either all-wheel drive or chains. Our fleet is all-wheel drive and maintained to that standard year-round.

Vail Pass closes. The tunnel closes. Floyd Hill gets ugly in freezing rain in a way that catches people out, because by then it feels like you are nearly in Denver. The last forty miles of this drive are not the easy part.

The alternatives, honestly

Drive yourself. Fine with an AWD rental and no 6am flight. Less fine at 3:30am in a storm after a week of skiing.

The scheduled shared services. Cheaper per seat, and a real option if you are travelling alone with one bag. You will stop for other passengers and you will leave on their schedule, not yours.

A private transfer. Worth it when you are a group, when you have ski gear, when the flight matters, or when you simply do not want to drive the tunnel before dawn. For four or more people the per-person maths usually stops being close.

What we run

All-wheel-drive Mercedes-Benz Sprinters in 11- and 14-passenger layouts, AWD SUVs for couples and small groups, and coaches for larger movements. Meet the fleet.

The thing people underestimate going home: you have more than you arrived with. A group of eight with eight ski bags, eight boot bags and eight suitcases does not fit in a vehicle rated for eight people. Capacity is a volume question, not a seat count. Tell us the group and the gear and we will tell you honestly what it takes.

Every movement is private and assigned.
