Vail sits at 8,150 feet in the Gore Creek valley, about 100 miles west of Denver and only 35 minutes from Eagle County Airport. Which of those two numbers you travel is the single biggest decision of your trip.
The short way in. West on I-70 down the Eagle River valley, no Continental Divide crossing, no Eisenhower Tunnel, no Vail Pass. EGE runs a heavy winter schedule and a much thinner one in summer, so check before you commit. It is also a serious private aviation airport, and we pick up at the FBO routinely — send us the tail number and we track the aircraft rather than a published schedule.
Roughly 100 miles. I-70 west out of Denver, climbing through Georgetown and Silver Plume to the Eisenhower Tunnel at 11,158 feet, down to Silverthorne and Frisco, then over Vail Pass at 10,662 feet and into the valley. Longer than EGE, but DEN has the schedule, the fares and the reliability, and it does not cancel in weather the way small mountain airports do.
Two honest notes. Between November and April, a Friday or Saturday westbound can add 60 to 90 minutes — that is normal, not a bad day. And storm closures at the tunnel and over Vail Pass happen. We watch conditions on the actual route and build the buffer in before we quote your pickup time.
About 2 hours 15 minutes over the same corridor via Glenwood. If your group is splitting between the Vail Valley and Aspen, we can cover both ends in the same day with one dispatcher holding the plan. See Aspen car service.
Vail is not one drop-off. Vail Village, Lionshead, Cascade Village, Golden Peak, East Vail and West Vail all have different access, and several of the residential streets above the village have driveways a two-wheel-drive vehicle simply will not climb after a storm. Give us the property name or address when you book and we bring a vehicle that gets up it.
Vail runs on group logistics — conference arrivals, executive retreats staged out of private homes, and wedding weekends where guests land across three airports on two days. For multi-vehicle jobs we assign one point of contact who holds the manifest and moves vehicles as the day actually unfolds. See corporate transportation and wedding transportation.
About 1 hour 45 minutes in good conditions. In winter, or on a weekend afternoon in ski season, plan for two and a half to three. We build that into your pickup time.
Often, yes — it is 35 minutes versus nearly two hours. But EGE has limited service outside winter. Ask us and we will tell you which arrival actually works for your dates.
Always. Your vehicle, your schedule, your stops. You are never waiting on a van to fill.
That is the job. If the pass genuinely is not safe we say so early and reschedule rather than gambling with you in the vehicle.
