Vail sits about 120 miles west of Denver International Airport on I-70 — roughly two hours in clear conditions, and considerably more in the conditions you are most likely to be driving in.
But before you plan this drive at all, there is a question worth asking.
Should you be flying from Eagle instead?
Eagle County Regional Airport is 35 miles from Vail — about forty minutes.
That is 85 fewer miles, no Vail Pass, no Eisenhower Tunnel, and no Floyd Hill. For a lot of departures it is simply the better airport, and we run that leg constantly.
Use EGE when the schedule works, you are travelling as a group, or the weather is genuinely bad over the passes. Use DIA when EGE has nothing going where you need to go, you need a direct international connection, or the fare difference is large enough to be worth the extra two hours.
We would rather tell you to drive forty minutes to Eagle than sell you a four-hour run to Denver you did not need. If you are heading the other way, see Eagle Airport to Aspen.
The route to Denver, and what it does to you
East on I-70 over Vail Pass, down into Summit County, through the Eisenhower Tunnel at 11,000 feet, then the long descent through Georgetown and down Floyd Hill into the Denver metro — then another 25 miles east across the city to DIA.
Three mountain passes’ worth of elevation change, two of the most closure-prone stretches of interstate in the country, and a city crossing at the end.
Vail Pass closes. Not rarely — regularly, in winter, often with little warning, and there is no useful detour. When it shuts, you wait.
The Sunday eastbound crawl is real. Every skier in Summit and Eagle counties heads toward Denver at the same time on Sunday afternoon. Add hours, not minutes.
What time should I leave Vail for a DIA flight?
| Your flight departs DIA | Leave Vail (clear) | Leave (winter or Sunday) |
|---|---|---|
| 6:00 AM | 1:00 AM | the night before |
| 9:00 AM | 4:00 AM | 3:00 AM |
| 12:00 PM | 7:00 AM | 6:00 AM |
| 3:00 PM | 10:00 AM | 8:30 AM |
| 6:00 PM | 1:00 PM | 11:00 AM |
Two hours driving, two at the airport, plus winter and Sunday margin.
For a 6:00 AM departure in winter, our honest advice is usually fly out of Eagle, or overnight near DIA. Crossing Vail Pass and the tunnel at 1am in a storm to make a dawn flight is a bad plan even when it works.
Winter operations
Colorado’s traction law runs September 1 to May 31 on the I-70 mountain corridor. Under Code 15 every vehicle needs adequate tread plus all-wheel drive or chains. Our fleet is AWD and kept to that standard year-round, because we are on this road in February and the law is not a formality.
We build departure times from what the road is doing that morning. If the pass is closed, or the forecast says it will be, you will hear from us the night before — not at pickup.
What we run
All-wheel-drive Mercedes-Benz Sprinters in 11- and 14-passenger layouts, AWD SUVs, and coaches for larger groups. Meet the fleet, or see how seating capacity works once ski gear is involved.
Private and assigned, every time. No shared seats, no collecting other passengers on the way.

About 120 miles to Denver International Airport via I-70. Published figures range from 118 to 125 miles depending on the measuring point.
How long is the drive from Vail to Denver?
About two hours in clear conditions. In winter, or on a Sunday afternoon in ski season, plan on three or more.
Is Eagle airport closer?
Much. EGE is 35 miles from Vail, roughly forty minutes, and for many departures it is the better choice.
What time should I leave Vail for a morning flight from DIA?
For a 9:00 AM departure, around 4:00 AM, or 3:00 AM in winter. For anything earlier, consider Eagle or an overnight near the airport.
What happens if Vail Pass closes?
You wait — there is no practical alternative route. We monitor conditions and will move your departure earlier when a closure looks likely.
