Denver to Winter Park: 67 miles and one pass

Winter Park is about 67 miles from Denver International Airport and roughly an hour and forty minutes door to door in clear conditions. It is the closest major ski resort to Denver, which is exactly why it fills up on a Saturday morning.

The route matters here more than at any other Colorado resort. You run I-70 west to Empire, then turn north onto US-40 and climb Berthoud Pass. There is no tunnel. You go over the top at 11,307 feet on a road of tight switchbacks with real exposure, and then descend the other side into the Fraser Valley.

Berthoud Pass is the whole conversation

Berthoud is a beautiful drive in summer and a serious one in winter. It closes for avalanche control. It gets snowpacked before the interstate does because it is higher and it is plowed later. And it has no shoulder in the places where you would most want one.

Colorado enforces a Traction Law on US-40 over the pass during storms: snow tires, all-wheel drive or chains. Rental cars frequently do not qualify, and drivers who start up it in a front-wheel-drive sedan on all-season tires are the reason the pass backs up.

Every vehicle we run is all-wheel drive and set up for winter before the season starts, and our drivers do this pass in weather as routine rather than as an adventure. When CDOT closes it we route around through Granby, which adds about an hour and is a decision our driver makes on the morning of your trip based on conditions, not in advance based on what sounds faster.

The train, honestly

Winter Park is the one Colorado resort with a genuine rail option. The Winter Park Express runs from Denver Union Station to the base area on winter weekends, and when it fits your plans it is a good way to travel.

What it will not do: pick you up at Denver International, run on a weekday, wait for a delayed flight, or take you to a rental house in Fraser. If you land at DEN you still need ground transport into Denver to catch it, and if your flight slips you have missed it. For a Saturday trip planned well in advance with luggage you can carry, the train is worth considering. For anything else, or for a group with gear, a vehicle that leaves when you land is the simpler answer.

Private car service vs. the resort options

Your alternatives from Denver are a shared van on a fixed timetable that departs when it is full and stops at several properties before yours, a rental car you then have to drive over Berthoud and park for a week, or a private vehicle assigned to you.

Winter Park, Fraser, or somewhere up the valley

“Winter Park” covers a fair amount of ground and the address matters.

The Village at Winter Park is the base area, walking distance to the lifts, and where most of the hotel and condo lodging sits. Downtown Winter Park is a couple of miles north on US-40 with the restaurants and the grocery store. Fraser is another three miles up, cheaper lodging and a lot of rental houses. Tabernash and Granby are further still, and Granby is where you go for Granby Ranch or to carry on toward Grand Lake.

Give us the street address when you book, plus the gate code if there is one. Rental houses in Fraser and Tabernash sit on steep unplowed driveways more often than not, and a driver who knows that plans for it.

Groups, gear and families

A Mercedes Sprinter seats up to 14 with room for skis and boards, which works out cheaper per person than two SUVs and considerably less stressful than three rental cars trying to regroup at the top of a pass. Luxury SUVs handle couples and small families. Car seats are no problem if you tell us ages when you book, and for ski groups we build gear loading into the schedule rather than discovering it at the curb.

The return trip

For a Denver departure we leave Winter Park three and a half hours before wheels-up in winter and three in summer. That feels conservative right up until the Sunday afternoon when Berthoud goes to one lane for avalanche work and the group that left three hours out misses the flight.
