Five airports serve the mountains, and choosing the wrong one can cost you half a day. We run all of them, and we will tell you honestly which arrival makes your trip work — even when it means a shorter drive for us.
The workhorse. Best schedule, best fares, most reliable in weather, and the longest drive. About 4 hours to Aspen through Glenwood Canyon, 2 hours to Breckenridge over the Eisenhower Tunnel, 1 hour 45 to Vail, 2 hours to Beaver Creek, and roughly 6 hours 30 to Telluride. The insider arrival, and usually the smart one. About 30 minutes to Beaver Creek, 35 to Vail, and 70 minutes to Aspen — no Continental Divide crossing, no Eisenhower Tunnel, no Vail Pass. It runs a heavy winter schedule and a much thinner one in summer, so check before you book. A serious private aviation airport too; we pick up at the FBO as a matter of routine. See EGE to Aspen.
Closest to town — about 10 minutes to downtown Aspen, 20 to Snowmass — and the most weather-sensitive airport in the state. The approach is steep and the minimums are strict for good reason. When ceilings drop, aircraft divert, usually to Eagle, Grand Junction or Denver, and you find out on landing. We track the inbound and reposition rather than waiting for your call. Montrose is the practical arrival for the San Juans — about 1 hour 20 minutes to Telluride over Dallas Divide through Ridgway. Telluride Regional is 15 minutes out and spectacular when it works, but as the highest commercial airport in the United States it closes for weather often enough that we would not build a tight itinerary around it. Covers the western slope and doubles as a common ASE diversion airport. About 2 hours 30 minutes to Telluride, roughly 2 hours 15 back to Aspen.
This is the part that actually separates operators. Mountain weather diverts aircraft, closes passes and strands people who booked on the assumption that everything runs on time. Glenwood Canyon closes for rockfall. I-70 westbound on a Friday in ski season adds an hour without warning. The Eisenhower Tunnel shuts in a bad storm cycle.
We watch conditions on your actual route and build the buffer in before we quote a pickup time. If a road genuinely is not safe, we say so early and reschedule rather than gambling with you in the vehicle. And if you are diverted mid-air, we reposition to wherever you actually land.
Split arrivals across three airports on two different days is normal work, not an exception.
