Eagle County Regional is the arrival most people do not think of, and it is usually the better one. About 70 minutes to Aspen against roughly four hours from Denver — the same trip, minus most of a day.

The route is straightforward and it is the good part of the drive. West on I-70 down the Eagle River valley through Gypsum and Dotsero, then into Glenwood Canyon — sixteen miles of viaducts and rock walls, and genuinely one of the best stretches of interstate in the country. At Glenwood Springs we turn south on Highway 82 and run up the Roaring Fork Valley through Carbondale, El Jebel and Basalt into Aspen.
No Continental Divide crossing. No Eisenhower Tunnel. No Vail Pass. The three things that turn a Denver transfer into a five-hour day are all behind you before you land.
EGE is a serious private aviation airport, and a large share of our Aspen work starts there rather than at the commercial terminal. Vail Valley Jet Center handles the private side, and we pick up there as a matter of routine.
Send us the tail number and we track the aircraft, not a published schedule. If you land 40 minutes early we are there when the door opens; if you are held on the ground somewhere, nobody is sitting on your clock. When Aspen weather is marginal. ASE is a demanding airport with a steep approach and a short window. When it goes down, flights divert — often to Eagle or Grand Junction. Booking into EGE and driving the last 70 minutes removes that risk entirely.
When the schedule does not work. ASE runs limited aircraft on limited routes. EGE has more seats, more direct service in winter, and often materially better fares.
When you are travelling with a group or gear. Small regional aircraft into Aspen have real baggage limits. Sizeable ski groups routinely find EGE easier.
One caveat worth knowing: EGE runs a heavy winter schedule and a much thinner one in summer and shoulder season. In July, Denver or Aspen may simply be the only realistic option. Ask us — we will tell you which arrival makes the day work, even when it means a shorter trip for us.
Eagle County is the gateway to more than Aspen. From EGE it is about 30 minutes to Beaver Creek and about 35 to Vail, and we run both constantly. If your group is splitting between the Vail Valley and the Roaring Fork Valley, we can cover both ends of it in the same day with the same dispatcher holding the plan.
Highway 82 up the Roaring Fork is well maintained and rarely closes. The variable on this route is Glenwood Canyon, which closes for rockfall, mudslide and occasional crash events; the detour when it does is long, and we would rather tell you that up front than surprise you with it.
Every vehicle is all-wheel drive on winter tires, and our drivers run this corridor through every storm cycle of the season. If conditions genuinely are not safe, we say so early and reschedule rather than gambling with you in the vehicle.
It is about 70 miles and around 90 minutes in clear conditions, and it is one of the easier mountain drives in Colorado because you spend most of it on an interstate.
Out of the airport you pick up I-70 westbound at Eagle, run down the Eagle River valley past Wolcott and Gypsum, and then drop through Glenwood Canyon — a genuinely spectacular stretch of divided highway cut into the canyon walls above the Colorado River. At Glenwood Springs you leave the interstate and turn south onto Highway 82, then climb the Roaring Fork Valley through Carbondale and Basalt for the last forty minutes into Aspen.
There is no high pass on this route in either direction, which is the whole point. Glenwood Canyon can close for rockfall or a crash, and when it does the detour is long, but that is rare compared with the weather closures you plan around on the Denver side.
Three honest comparisons, since this is the decision most people are actually making.
Against flying into Aspen (ASE): ASE puts you ten minutes from town instead of ninety. It also diverts and cancels far more than Eagle does, because the approach is harder and the runway is shorter. If your trip has a fixed obligation at the front of it — a wedding, a board meeting, a closing — EGE plus a ninety-minute transfer is the more reliable plan even though it looks like the longer one on paper.
Against flying into Denver (DEN): DEN is 160 miles and about four hours, with the Eisenhower Tunnel and Vail Pass in between. EGE cuts the ground leg roughly in half and removes both. DEN wins on flight choice and price; EGE wins on the day.
Against renting a car at EGE: this is a fine drive in September and a different proposition in January, when Highway 82 through the valley is snowpacked and the Traction Law is in force. A rental that does not qualify is a rental you get turned around in.
EGE is small and straightforward. One terminal, a short walk to the curb, and no garage to navigate. Your driver tracks the tail number rather than the schedule, so an early landing is met early and a long tarmac hold costs nothing extra.
We handle skis, boards, golf clubs and oversized bags as part of the job. A Mercedes Sprinter takes up to 14 with gear, which for a family or a group is cheaper per person than two SUVs and a great deal less trouble than three rentals trying to convoy through Glenwood Canyon.
Plenty of arrivals at Eagle are not going to Aspen at all, and we run those too. Vail is about 35 minutes east, Beaver Creek about 20, Avon and Edwards less than that, and Gypsum and Eagle are minutes from the terminal. Down valley the other way, Glenwood Springs is about 45 minutes, Carbondale an hour, and Basalt an hour and ten.
If your group is splitting between Vail and Aspen off the same arrival, tell us the manifest and we will sequence it rather than quote you two separate jobs.
For a departure out of EGE we leave Aspen two and a half hours before wheels-up in winter and two in summer. Glenwood Canyon is the variable — one incident and the interstate stops with no way around it — so the buffer is deliberate.
If your EGE flight cancels, the fallback is ground to Denver, which is about four hours from Aspen and closer to three from the Eagle end. Tell us in advance if you are on a flight you cannot miss and we will plan that rather than improvise it at the counter.

Eagle County Regional Airport sits about 70 miles from Aspen. The Aspen Chamber of Commerce puts that drive at roughly one hour and forty minutes, and Wildpath Transportation plans to that figure rather than the optimistic one, so leaving Aspen three hours and forty-five minutes before a scheduled departure covers the drive plus a full two-hour terminal buffer. Winter conditions on Glenwood Canyon warrant another thirty minutes.
