Aspen, Colorado to Denver International Airport (DEN) is 200 miles and about four hours of driving. Getting into Aspen is the part everybody plans. Getting back out is the part that makes people miss flights.
Wildpath Transportation runs Aspen to Denver every week of the year. This page is about the departure specifically — how early to leave, what closes the road, and what happens when your flight out of Aspen cancels and you suddenly need four hours of ground instead.
It is about 160 miles and four hours door to door in normal conditions. That number is honest and it already includes the drive down the Roaring Fork Valley through Basalt and Carbondale, the run east through Glenwood Canyon, the climb over Vail Pass, the Eisenhower Tunnel at 11,158 feet, and the descent into the Front Range.
In winter, or on a Sunday afternoon when I-70 is packed with skiers heading home, add an hour. Any operator who promises you three hours flat has either never driven it in January or is telling you what you want to hear.
This is the whole question, so here are the numbers we actually work to:
Five hours feels absurd when you are standing outside your hotel at 5am. It stops feeling absurd the one time I-70 closes at Vail Pass for avalanche control and the group that left four hours out watches their flight leave without them, while the group that left five makes it with time for coffee.
We would rather sit at the airport for an hour with you than explain why we did not.
Three things, in order of how often they happen:
Vail Pass. Closes for avalanche mitigation and for crashes, usually for one to three hours, sometimes longer. There is no practical detour — the alternatives add hours.
The Eisenhower Tunnel. Drops to one bore for incidents and maintenance, which backs traffic up for miles. Loveland Pass at 11,990 feet is the only way around it, and in a storm that is a worse idea than waiting.
Glenwood Canyon. Closes for rockfall and for crashes. When it goes, the detour is very long, which is why the buffer matters at the Aspen end of the drive rather than the Denver end.
Our drivers check CDOT before every run, not at the trailhead, and they will tell you at pickup if the day looks like it needs the extra hour.
This is the single most common reason people call us with three hours notice.
Aspen/Pitkin County Airport has one of the highest weather-cancellation rates of any commercial airport in the country. When a departure is scrubbed, the airline may not have another seat for a day, and your realistic option is ground transport to Denver — along with several hundred other people trying to do exactly the same thing in the same hour.
We hold winter capacity for this on corporate and repeat accounts, because the call always comes in at the same moment for everybody in the valley. If you are flying out of ASE on a ticket that matters, tell us in advance and we will plan the fallback rather than improvise it at the counter.
Leaving Aspen for Denver, your realistic options are:
We run the last one. One driver, one flat quoted price agreed before the trip, no other passengers and no other stops. For a group of four with luggage and a flight to catch, it is usually also the cheapest once you count four regional fares and bag charges.
Colorado enforces a Traction Law on I-70 during storms: vehicles need snow tires, all-wheel drive or chains. Rental cars frequently do not qualify, and drivers get turned around at the tunnel or fined for blocking the interstate.
Every vehicle we run is all-wheel drive and set up for winter before the season starts. Our drivers work this corridor in storms as routine rather than as an emergency. That is the real argument for booking a driver for a February departure: not comfort, but that the person at the wheel has done this drive hundreds of times in exactly these conditions.
Anywhere in the valley, at your door. Downtown Aspen, Red Mountain, Starwood, Snowmass Village and Base Village, Woody Creek, Old Snowmass, Basalt, El Jebel and Carbondale are all on the same run at the same rate structure.
Give us the street address and the gate code when you book. At 5am in January, a driver who already knows the last quarter mile is a steep unplowed driveway is worth a great deal.
A Mercedes Sprinter takes up to 14 with room for skis and boards, which beats two SUVs on price per person and three rental cars on sanity. Luxury SUVs handle couples, families and executive departures. Car seats are no problem if you tell us ages when you book.
We do 4am and 5am departures all winter. It is most of what we do in March.
Plenty of trips involve more than one valley. We run the resort-to-resort legs as their own service: Aspen to Vail (100 miles, about 2hr 15 via Glenwood Canyon), Breckenridge to Aspen (2.5 hours over Independence Pass in summer, 3.5 around through Glenwood in winter), and Grand Junction to Aspen (125 miles, no high pass, and the airport ASE flights divert to).

Do you also do Aspen to Eagle airport?
Yes — Eagle (EGE) is about 90 minutes and we run it constantly. For an EGE departure we leave Aspen two and a half hours out in winter.
