Grand Junction is the airport most Aspen visitors have never considered, and it is often the one with a seat when nothing else does. It is also where ASE flights divert to when the weather closes Aspen. Either way, you end up needing 125 miles of ground.
About 125 miles and two and a half hours door to door in clear conditions. The drive is straightforward: I-70 east out of Grand Junction, up through Rifle and New Castle to Glenwood Springs, then south on Highway 82 through Carbondale and Basalt into Aspen.
It is mostly interstate and there is no high pass in either direction, which is the reason this route holds up in weather that closes other approaches. In winter it is frequently the most reliable way into the valley after Eagle.
This is worth reading before your trip rather than during it.
Aspen/Pitkin County Airport has one of the highest weather-diversion rates of any commercial airport in the country. When the ceiling drops, flights get sent to Grand Junction, Eagle or back to Denver. You land somewhere you did not plan to be, usually with a few hundred other people in the same position, all calling the same handful of operators at once.
Two things help. First, tell us your flight number when you book the inbound, not just your arrival time. We track the tail number, so if you divert we know before you have cleared the aircraft. Second, if you are travelling on a date with something fixed at the other end, say so and we will plan the fallback rather than improvise it.

No pass, but two things still matter. Glenwood Canyon closes for rockfall and crashes, and the detour is long, so we build in a buffer. And Colorado enforces a Traction Law on I-70 and Highway 82 during storms, requiring snow tires, all-wheel drive or chains. Rental cars from the Grand Junction counters frequently do not qualify.

Grand Junction Regional (GJT) is a small, easy airport. One terminal, a short walk to the curb, no garage to navigate. Your driver tracks the flight rather than the schedule, so an early arrival is met early and a long hold costs you nothing extra.
We handle skis, boards, golf clubs and oversized bags as part of the job. A Mercedes Sprinter takes up to 14 with gear, which for a family or group beats two SUVs on price and three rental cars on sanity.
Aspen and Snowmass Village are the usual destinations, but the whole corridor is on the same run: Glenwood Springs about 90 minutes, Carbondale about two hours, Basalt about two hours ten, and El Jebel, Woody Creek and Old Snowmass a few minutes either side. For a GJT departure we leave Aspen three and a half hours before wheels-up in winter and three in summer. Glenwood Canyon is the variable, and it is the reason for the margin rather than nervousness about the rest of the drive.
